yes, since i've used in a couple of games and programs that use it 
without problems. We have libunix that help us since it convert amiga 
filepath to unix one

But in the case i've posted above an user can choose to play video that 
has an amiga filepath style and the program doesn't translate it so the 
first test present in the URL class fail and it seems like the path is 
not an absolute url
