Why don't you just use shell environment variables?
I guess it's that I want them to be an aba configuration thing, not a my-user-account configuration thing. I want someone who copies the .aba directory to get my entire config. And it feels like unnecessary pollution my normal environment variable namespace.

I may be making things hard on myself, but things seem either easy or impossible in bash land.
