My experience with lwip is a positive one. Not sure what 'loose ends'
means, but my impression is that the code is in good shape. By the
way, it's running happily on my ARM7-based board.
I'm using lwip without an RTOS. As for FreeRTOS, you need to ask its
maintainers about the quality of the lwip port.
