I'm curious about what "modern" systems would run on that sort of
hardware - but my last ones died a few years ago.

You can simply report your OS version, and steps you took to make
things work . I think we'll eventually formalise around Debian stable
(and selected backports) as the base for minimum requirements, but
it's nice to have copy/paste lines for various systems.
