Thanks for the quick reply, Mark.  Looks like the Mac OS X / MacPorts
requirements section needs to be updated (at
http://mingw-cross-env.nongnu.org/#requirements-macos) to include an
xz program.
That URL gives the requirements for the current release. For the *development* version, you have to check doc/index.html in your mingw-cross-env directory. There is also some macosx-specific information there.
