Things are surely not that bad.  The question is what to do with certs
that come with revisions that you want to take (because you've given
the sender permission to give you stuff).

If you take the certs (even though you don't trust them yet), then you
can look and decide whether you want to trust them or not.  If you
don't, then you've thrown away the information that the author
intended that some revisions should be on some branches.  And you take
away making that choice from anyone who gets the revisions from you.
