i have no opinion on timeline/versioning.  i'll keep the git repo
up-to-date so it's ready to go when people want it.

AUTHORS makes sense in old VCS systems like CVS/SVN, but distributed
VCS systems make a sane distinction between author & committer.  once
nano switches to git, the AUTHORS file could be snapshotted & created
on the fly from git.  move the existing one to AUTHORS.in and have the
bootstrap logic update AUTHORS using the git history.
