It's been years for me.  Doesn't it let one edit the quoted email?  :-)

I looked it up, and maybe this reply will work

And you don't wish nmh to pass the email to Postfix to get the same
consistent treatment?

I want exactly the same treatment of nmh content. But, the fdqn hostname is already a literal in the nmh email draft by virtue of needing to include a "from: " line before it reaches postfix. The mh-format(5) reference mentioned mts.conf somewhere, and I found that localname was unset in my present mts.conf.  In contrast, localname was set to my domain name (no brief hostname) in my crashed host's mts.conf. I altered my mts.conf to be like the crashed host. Now everything nmh works again on the replacement host.

Thanks folks!
