Follow-up Comment #4, bug #48474 (project octave):

I would guess that the first thing worth doing would be to test the default
branch of Octave. There have been many fixes made to improve things when
working with gnuplot 5.

If this bug is still present on the default branch, then maybe someone with
more knowledge of gnuplot can help figure out what's wrong, or a small test
case can be produced that shows that this is an error in gnuplot and a bug
reported to the gnuplot project.

As it is now, with Octave 4.0.3, you have a workaround using the 4.6 version
of gnuplot.

Can someone test the original example on Windows using a build from the
default branch?

One thing I wasn't clear about from the original message, is the wrong color
shown on-screen, or when the figure is printed to a file, or both?
