Follow-up Comment #9, bug #53073 (project octave):

The issue is not present if anti-aliasing is disabled.  This works:

plot (1, 'o-', 'linewidth', 4)
set (gcf, 'graphicssmoothing', 'off')
print test.pdf

It may be due to another change where one of two graphics backplanes is
changed in color value only during printing.  Presumably after printing it may
revert back to its value of black and possibly be mixed in through the
anti-aliasing mechanism.
