That might mean there is something a bit off with the Tcl/Tk/BLT installation.
A stack trace would probably indicate if that's the case (as explained
by Alex).

The thing about the binaries is that all the components are tested
together, and are a known quantity.  

Generally, one either should go in the direction of building
absolutely everything from source (with scripts recording the exact
build parameters), or nothing from source (using our binaries for
Swarm, Tcl, Tk, libpng, zlib, BLT, hdf5, kaffe, and xpm).

Anything in-between makes it hard to know the state of your machine.
