darwin gcc3.1 problem

I'm having a problem with gcc3.1 on MacOSX.  gcc compiles and installs 
normally, but it  fails in the configure script.  I think there is a 
problem with the path  or environment. I don't know.

checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler 
cannot create executables
