Thanks Paul,
    I got the demo working by:

1) following your instructions for

mkdir -p swarm/OtherPeoplesCode/

cd swarm/OtherPeoplesCode/

2) then downloading and unzipping your tar file of ConwayLife to the 
OtherPeoplesCode dirctory.

3) then following the last 3 instructions:

cd ConwayLife-1.2

make

./conway1

Thanks for your efforts!  Now I have to learn swarm so that I can use it 
for my own creations...
