I mainly use them as a nice select/yank feature.  Occasionally someone
digs into the rectangular selections, and I get to either explain the 
behavior, or fix a problem...

yes... it seems to me that while mode-specific bindings fix some issues,
they have a problem that they're not easily visible to the user, for
diagnosing problems.
