I don't mind seeing him toned down, but as Nils said, I think the 
current state of berzerk (no berzerk on defense) is very important to 
have.

It's not terribly consequential for multiplayer, but it is extremely 
important for campaigns where the player owns the units, and is even 
more so when it is a berzerker the player owns, rather than an 
ulfzerker.  Wesnoth is unforgiving enough about units dying in 
campaigns, becoming more so would be a Bad Thing™.

In regard to options 2 & 3 - yes, it is perfectly reasonable to have 
berserkers cost as much as, if not more than mages.
