I think I found the problem. The compile script says at the
        if test -f "$cofile"; then
          mv "$cofile" "$ofile"
        elif test -f "${cofile}bj"; then
          mv "${cofile}bj" "$ofile"

Using Bill's compiler $cofile is set to something like


which is not understood by test.
