The format file is written, but preview-latex decides not to use it since an error occured when writing it. So it gets removed again. We won't change that: dumping the preamble using mylatex.ltx can cause errors even when the document would compile without it, so with an error, we should not use it, period.
Thanks for the explanation. Sounds reasonable.
You can easily avoid the error by using \newcommand{\makeindex}{} before loading natbib.sty, and obviously you should complain to the author of natbib about this asinine behavior.
I will do so. Currently I m using \providecommand{\makeindex}{}since this doesn't inhibit normal LaTeX runs. Unfortunately those are necessary sometimes to get all the included MeatPost diagrams (directly via emp.sty or indirectly via feynmp.sty) into the correct places. I haven't found a possibility yet to have those play nicely together with preview-latex. BTW, is it possible to call latex with '-shell-escape' on a case by case basis from within AUCTeX, similar to source specials or PDF mode?
Thanks for your help. cheerio ralf
