ESC DEL generates ESC C-d

In GNU Emacs 21.1.2 (i386--freebsd, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2001-11-19 on pyrl.eye
configured using `configure  --prefix=/usr/local i386--freebsd'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

On a FreeBSD-stable system under X, ESC DEL now generates ESC C-d

I started this emacs with -q and --no-site-file.  The misbehavior is
the same.

In a recent former version of emacs running on this identical system
(with the SAME kernel and binaries!), I could press ESC DEL in a
dired-x buffer and all of my files would be unmarked, but now the
function dired-tree-down is run rather than dired-unmark-all-files as
