This is not entirely true; AFAIK the module doesn't need all of
gettext; it needs only the libintl. libintl is under LGPL (or
contained in glibc which is also LGPL). Therefore it the module's
Makefiles ensure that a libintl will be used as a shared library, not
as a static library, the module doesn't fall under LGPL or GPL.

Only if distributing statically linked binaries was the intention,
would the module fall under LGPL/GPL.
