The problem is that, as we are using it now, that mechanism does nothing
different from the more portable equivalents.  It will only handle C++
exceptions if Emacs is built with -fexceptions, and Emacs is not.

How about only on GNU/Linux systems, and maybe Mac OS and Windows?
