Exactly, and since "patch-xx" is almost always an illegal name without such
expansion, it seems quite safe too (obviously some care should be taken, but
... it doesn't seems like a particularly risky change).

Didn't you and Colin have competing patches to do jus this?  Whatever
happened to those?

They turned out to be complementary, and James has merged them into 1.2.1. Colin's function is arch_fqvsn_from_tree_and_input and mine is arch_determine_revision. But they have to be applied command-by-command, so they don't have a lot of coverage yet.

Both support patchlevel names.
