There's one addendum to b) that we can learn from Linux kernel
development: "... unless new code has been written already and
is better than the previous code in which case a) need to be
applied". Emphasis on _has been written already_. Existing
code rulez.

Agreed wholeheartedly. We need a patient object. Let it wrap
whatever happens to occur inside it. That's what it is for.
Refactoring is inevitable anyways.
