I'm still not sure about this though. GnuCash 1.8.7, with Guile 1.4 and the 
libguilegtk 0.20, works fine. So, if it is in fact using libguilegtk, I'm not 
sure that chasing CVS is going to help.

If you're getting the impression that I am resisting upgrading, you're right 
;-) I'll investigate guile 1.6. If it doesn't require a major whack-a-mole or 
pulling in huge swaths of unstable-- and doesn't break anything I'm using 
now--, I'll certainly try it and report back results.
