You don't have to set blot-diameter to 0 - just set it to less than
stem-width. (or, in case it is renamed to radius - set the radius to less
than half stem-width).

Eh, well...
The rounded beam vs stems problem is only a problem when stem-width is less
than blot-diameter.
Juergens suggestion will simply make it impossible to draw stems thinner than
blot diameter (if stem-width is set to 0, then the stem thickness will appear
to be blot-diameter) and hence the problem will not occur - but I will not
call it a fix - just a limitation.
