hmm: why did the configure script think there's a dirent.h, then?
(can you send me the config.log? - this chunk of ifdef's should have
worked properly).

the HP-UX source - I don't know: I never had to set it (but perhaps HP's
screwed up the headers in the past few years since I used Apollos).
