Follow-up Comment #9, bug #41067 (project octave):

i think i will try from minimal dependencies and move forward.

i am currently creating a clean 12.04 install in virtualbox.

do you think there be any value in building debug debug version of octave?  
i'm uncertain here.  i have seen cases where debug builds work, while release
crashes so this might miss the issue entirely.

if you think a debug build is worth trying, any instructions on how to build
this?    i have looked at the configure script.  i did not see anything to
turn on debug symbols.
