IMHO that's something that simply happened along the way. I never found it
handy, yet not worth a bug report / feature request. But now that we're here
...

Sure, but this bug started with 'addpath', not 'canonicalize_file_name'. I'd
expect the result of 'addpath' (i.e., the search path) to return something
that resembles as much as possible what I have fed it :-)

No no, nothing broke (yet?), but there are several motives, see bug #62865
that I've just entered.
