just noticed the 2nd part of the original reply about using view / matching to
control which headers are displayed - I tried adjusting these settings also,
but it seems that what Pan is doing is not filtering the view or marking items
read. The behavior seems more analogous to doing a Ctrl+A in the header listing
window (select all) and hitting the delete key. They seem to be completely
gone. I tried using the view > header pane > "match only" options to see if i
could get them to show - it actually seems to have crashed Pan - as soon as i
clicked one of the ''match only" entries (same goes for the "match only"
buttons on the toolbar), pan just immediately shut downnot sure if it's any
help, but i then ran this command on my linux mint box and got some Pan-related
results - wondering if it might be worth it to un-install and try installing an
older version possibly

English: Mark entire group read when leaving group

Also, pan can show or hide read articles (among many other display
filtering options).

View menu > Header pane > Match only unread articles

So depending on your preferences, you can still have them marked read if
you like, and have them displayed anyway.  (Unread articles show up in
bold, getting "unbolded" once they're marked read.)
