Hello Lars,
if the above message is printed out to your terminal, you also do not have
a correct setting of the LogDir variable in speechd.conf. For running Speech
Dispatcher as a user, I recommend to follow this procedure:
http://www.freebsoft.org/doc/speechd/speech-dispatcher_9.html#SEC24
That will give you your own configuration files for the specific user and
a place in ~/.speech-dispatcher/ for logfiles and pidfiles for this user
without any need to specify these paths on the command line
(via -P and -C).
However, I also believe the primary cause of the fact that you do not
get speech is wrong permissions to the audio device.
