Speechd-up does not announce all the punctuation chars set up in

Hi,
I set up Espeak.conf to speak certain punctuation chars, but Speechd-up 
does not announce all of them.
For example: It announces the "&" character, but not the ">" char, which 
I need to read mail quotings.
When I test the same configuration with yasr, everything works as it 
should. On my laptop with Gutsy and Orca, everything works correctly 
too.
Any ideas?
