speechd-el should read the character under the cursor by default without
any customization on left/right arrow movement and it works fine with
speechd-el 2.4 and Emacs 23.1. The line is read only on up/down arrow
movement.
Perhaps there is some incompatibility in the development version of
Emacs. I'll look at it, but not very soon, I'm busy with other things
for the next two weeks.
