Thanks for all the suggestions (Benedikt and Marcus, in particular). I did
end up writing a custom -copy method for my application, which works fine.
BTW, I only used -deleteAll to get rid of the old members. [mapOld drop]
was not necessary since I use the same mapOld to rebuild it.
