hi jeff,

from the names of the apps you mention, i take it you
are using the um demos.
note that the space lib has been folded into some other swarm libs,
so you don't need to reference that in the Makefile.
i think that is the source of your problem below.

attached is a Makefile that we use for the axelcult model these days...
you will have to change the refs to the location of swarm
(SWARMHOME) and the UM-ExpTools lib.
