Did you ever get this to work???
IMO on Leopard you should not use the builtin avcall. Leopard
includes a nice 4 way fat libffi. So best to use that.
Put --with-ffidir in your configure options.
I am trying to sort out the autoconf stuff right now. It has a bunch
of issues which have been swept under the carpet for some time.
Hopefully I will have it fixed soon.
