It turned out to be a "cockpit error" as I suspected in the first
place--I had incorrectly set the serial port speed.
Now that it is working, I notice that there are occasional hamlib
errors, but that is not an Xlog problem. The backend for the TS-570D is
listed as "untested".
I also noticed that if I set Xlog to round the frequency to 5
characters, it rounds to three characters. Setting to 4 characters
works correctly.
