Saw Brian Dean's post on avrdude and I'm a long way from being able tohelp, but my first step is to figure out how to 'un-tar' a file under Windows XP. Ican de-compress it to the base .tar file. Can someone point me in the right direction to get the rest of the way. Much appreciated.
WinZip (though other's object... perhaps with good reason.) http://www.winrar.com WinRar http://www.winace.com WinACE (which can create and open a LOT of formats)http://www.7-zip.org 7zip (open source, and some interesting features, though I had some odd path name issues with it on some tar.gz files)
However, as someone else pointed out - you will probably need Cygwin to build it anyway, so you might as well install it. Either that, or Msys (a set of unix tools with MinGW) which I find very handy to have on Windows boxen.
