It's a long-standing (decades old) joke in some places. Sun have a
history of starting strange and off-the-wall projects, and then
inexplicably cancelling them just as they start to show signs of
becoming mainstream and significant.

A notable exception to this trend is Java, which doesn't make them any
money.
