Over the past two days I've been having problems connecting to that host
with FTP.

It might not hurt to send a quick note to the administrator(s) of that
machine to say there's some problem with anonymous FTP. When I connect
with my default FTP client there's a one-minute pause and then I get a
"421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed"
error from my client because it has a built-in 60-second reply timeout.
The same error occurs no matter what network I try to connect from (and
all have valid working reverse DNS), and no matter what time of day I
try at.

However if I use a modified FTP client with a very long timeout (300
seconds, for example) then I can connect and eventually get logged in
anonymously.

For what it's worth I also have similar problems getting an answer from
the HTTP server which is running on that same host, which seems to me to
indicate that the problem might be with that host's ability able to get
timely DNS PTR responses from whatever DNS resolver it is using.

BTW, I thought the "usual place" was ftp.cs.usyd.edu.au? Of course both
ultimately point to the same IP# :-)
