One approach I've seen to this on the server side is
button at the bottom of the form that say, "expand text
area."  In the example I'm thinking of, it was a perl
script that re-rendered the html, while keeping the
contents intact.  Of course, the web can be pretty
lynx-unfriendly as it is, but if it were only a local
app you might be able to try something like that as a
temporary fix.
