try to use winsock2. Perhaps it's good to be consistent so applications
don't end up statically linked to both versions.

Good point, though I don't have an answer. Would we change the includes
also, or it is just a drop-in replacement?

For other packages we've changed the include to winsock2.h and the lib to -lws2_32.
