And don't forget that if you change continents, and it is even less
consistent. In the US, we say someone is "in the hospital", but in
various other English-speaking countries, it's usually someone is "in
hospital". As Tim points out, most folks refer to it (and have for quite
a long time now) as just "Usenet".
