"Replaceable firmware" is orthogonal to wanting 10s of thousands of songs in the palm of your hand.
Besides, those tiny ear buds are pretty horrible, so huge FLAC files would be a waste. Even if you had fancy headphones, "only" having 8 albums isn't that much of a burden. Or you could move to a 2GB or 4GB player.
