Steve,
I was in exactly your situation 18 months ago. I am a Botanist and
Geographer, my computer experience is in GIS, with 1 undergrad semester
of scripting in ARC/INFO AML.
I wrote my first Swarm model in a 1 semester (1/2 time) project as an
undergrad. The learning curve was steep, but what I learned was well
worth the effort. I now UNDERSTAND what modelling is about, and a large
part of that understanding was gained through learning Objective-C and
C. I have since sat in on an Electrical Engineering course in C. This
improved my skills a lot, but I was well on the way with my first model
under my belt before i did it.
I really dont think anyone can become a `well rounded' ecological
modeller without doing the hard bits. I had a lot of late nights and
lost weekends to get here though.
As far as the FSF/GNU angle, I now do better science because i use free
software almost exclusively. Not only is it free but it is usually
BETTER because it is written by scientists for science, not for
advertising executives.
Cheers,
Matt
