Uh, disagree. It is easier to keep a control key pressed during the
sequence rather than release it in the middle.
Sure it could be worse, but I would rather prefer that frequently used
operations be assigned to single or double keys at most. And this is the
way I have configured my "default" Windows editor (TSEPro). It allows
mapping operations to almost any key combinations. In a previous message
you seemed to imply that Emacs allows only limited combinations. I do not
know yet exactly which combinations are available.

Are you sure that is the right syntax? I have in my .Xresources just
Apparently it is right, though not sure as the documentation
of Emacs and X is not very illuminating on this matter.
Emacs.font: 10x20
Eg. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias has the line:
10x20 -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--20-200-75-75-c-100-iso8859-1
and emacs --font seems to produce the same result with either of them.
Indeed, fonts of the misc foundry display fine. The problem occurs with
Type 1 fonts as those in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1. Emacs renders
them very bad.
But (currently installed) misc fonts are not good enough for me:
1. 10x20 is too large as it makes Emacs window not to fit inside the
display (with 1024x768). And the inmediatelly smaller font, 9x15 is rather
small, in particular for preview mode. Perhaps there are intermediate size
fonts available for download.
2. misc fonts are too wide for my taste. I prefer characters with a bit
smaller width/hight ratio. I note however that AUCTeX displays sub and
supra index charatcters in a narrower font. This could be an issue.
I feel more comfortable with being responsible for every byte of my
source code instead of trying to figure out how I can coax a complex
system to output what I want.
For this reason I would not call LyX an editor.
Well, LyX is one, and then there are a few converters for different
languages and systems using it and/or dvipng, like tbookdtd
<URL:http://tbookdtd.sf.net> or WeBWorK. However, those are not
editors, but conversion frameworks.
Hence I would say that preview is not implemented in any other editor
besides Emacs.
I beleive that the editor mentioned above does not have a graphics display
engine suitable for an implementation of a preview mode. Anyway, I do not
loose hope that this could change in the future, or that Emacs allows much
more key combinations...
