For that reason I have got accustomed to using the slightly more  
complicated

  sudo make install DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH"   (on OS X)
  sudo make install LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"       (other  
platforms)
