It's not quite that simple.  To generate the final IL
for a strongly-typed front-end, it is necessary for
the back-end to know the type of every value and
the definition of every class.  This information is
lost when the parse tree is turned into RTL, as
far as I can tell from the gcc code.  This seems to
be why gcj uses a separate code generator for Java
rather than an RTL back-end.
