   The issue eventually boils down to this: do we want Emacs to be
   friendly to laptop batteries, or do we want it not to blink the
   cursor? 

My 2c: I would like Emacs to be as quiescent as possible, powerful on
demand, but otherwise unassuming.  My (old) computer struggles w/
recent Emacs as it is.  That said, i do not use Emacs w/o ~/.emacs;
"reasonable" required tweaks i would understand and condone.
