Thank you -- there was no bug that I could see, and the patch already worked 
according to your above criteria; now pushed to master.

I changed the error message, but feel free to make it better if you are able 
to. As mentioned, I didn't want it to end in a square bracket, because regexp 
I-search displays the error inside square brackets.
