cat /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache \
/usr/share/mime/subclasses | \
sed 's/ /\n/;s/=.*//' | sort -u

That ought to catch most of them.. pipe to "wc -l" to count.
I get 389 of them, that is why i gave up the idea to list
all mimetypes and to list registered applications insted
(when started without filename).
