For the record, the remaining problem was a too old
Ghostscript.
To summarize: To get Type1 fonts (nicely readable both on screen
and in print) for both music and text in a PDF version of a Lilypond
score:
- You need Ghostscript 6.0 or newer.
- Download and install Type1 fonts for Lilypond (today only
available for Lilypond 1.4.0-1.4.6 at
http://home.hetnet.nl/~mwisse/files/Lily-1.4.2-Type1-0.1.zip
but my machine at home is building versions for 1.4.7 and 1.5.7
right now, I'll make them available.)
- Call dvips with the additional flags
dvips -Ppdf -ulilypond.map yourfile.ps
- If you use lilypond-book or your own wrapper files,
don't use \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} in the file header
but don't forget \usepackage[latin1]{inputenc} if you
use any üåäöç or other non-anglosaxian characters.
